“In general, it must be said that, as a result of the situation, we need to start for new shores, namely rethinking and abandoning the usual path.”
This is the end of Erhard Busek’s comment in the Austrian “Kurier” entitled “Investments after Corona“. Let’s start this rethinking:
Corona will have been the fork in the road. When Erhard Busek is writing about “investments” we all mean “money” by now. Where do we want to invest our “money”? For half a millennium we have got used to defining our self-awareness through our “profession”. Our “profession” is giving us our (social) value. This “profession” is created by our “work”, which is thus giving us this value. Through our “work” we earn the “money” we need for our survival.
Corona will have been the fork in the road. What are we worth? For the survival of a few people, “who would have died anyway” (quote from the “green” mayor of Freiburg im Breisgau), the entire “economy” of our world stood still for a short time. Now “the economy” wants to “unlock” again. At what price?
Corona will have been the fork in the road. “Whoever saves a single person saves the whole world,” says the Talmud. At what “price” do we want to save this person? Mathematically speaking, we have exactly two options: at any price – or at no price in the world. What is a human life worth to us? Everything? Or nothing?
Corona will have been the fork in the road. Is a person’s “value” defined by his “work performance”? Or is a person’s “value” defined by life itself? In National Socialism and Capitalism, the “value” of man was defined by his “achievement”. Without “achievement” life was nothing “worth”. The minor providers were euthanized or rationalized away.
Corona will have been the fork in the road. For a short time we protected everyone’s life, “whatever it takes” (quote from the “turquoise” Federal Chancellor of the Republic of Austria). “The economy” stood still for a short time. For a short time no “achievement” was accomplished, no “money” was “earned” – apart from the necessary services. Interestingly, these necessary services were those with which people made only little “money”.
Corona will have been the fork in the road. For a short time we saved everyone, at all costs. For a short time, everyone was worth every price.
Corona will have been the fork in the road. What do we learn from this? What do we want to “pay”? Do we “pay” for “achievement” or do we “pay” for life itself? Do we pay for our lives with our achievement – or do we pay for achievement with our lives?
Corona will have been the fork in the road. What are we worth? And why? Do we evaluate our lives unconditionally? Do we pay our survival unconditionally? Do we create an income for our survival? Unconditionally? Or are we all rationalizing ourselves away?
Corona will have been the fork in the road.
