The Vienna daily “Die Presse” headlines today: “Live information on Covid-19: Austria faces a budget deficit of 26 billion Euros, more than 150,000 deaths worldwide.”
In this short headline we see the discrepancy that the coronavirus is ruthlessly making visible: What is life really about? And the alternative is cristal clear: your money or your life?
As of today, 150,000 dead worldwide cost a budget deficit of 26 billion Euros in Austria. If one puts these figures in relation, until today every dead person worldwide costs the Austrian state 173,333.33 Euros. That’s a lot of money.
Capitalism has managed to make everything, but really everything, measurable in money. Most people can thus be blackmailed. They ask themselves: “How will I be able to pay my rent in the future, how will I be able to afford my food, how will I be able to survive at all?”
There are completely different answers to this. The most beautiful of these comes from Jesus of Nazareth:
“Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothes?
Look at the birds in the sky; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they?
Can any one of you by worrying add a single hour to your life?
And why do you worry about clothes? See how the flowers of the field grow. They do not labor or spin.
Yet I tell you that not even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like one of these.
If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, will he not much more clothe you – you of little faith?
So do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’
For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them.
But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.
Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.”
I have no idea what this “God” and “Heavenly Father” is supposed to be. I only know one thing: it is NOT money. It is the opposite of money. It is the immeasurable, invalueable, incomprehensible. And so I have only one advice:
Guys, it’s not about money. It’s about something completely different. And maybe that’s becoming visible again just now.
